Dr. Arvind Singh Tejawat
Volume: 3 Issue: 4 2013
Abstract:
The Bhakti Movement, a prominent socio-religious reform movement in medieval India, played a pivotal role in reshaping the spiritual and cultural landscape of the subcontinent. This book chapter explores the multifaceted contributions of Surdas, a renowned poet-saint of the Bhakti Movement, in promoting the ideals of devotion, inclusivity, and social reform. Surdas' life and works are examined to unravel the profound influence he had on the Bhakti Movement and its enduring legacy. Surdas, born in the sixteenth century, was a blind poet-saint whose verses continue to resonate with spiritual seekers and scholars alike. His devotion to Lord Krishna, as expressed through his numerous compositions, transcended traditional boundaries and gave voice to a broader, more inclusive form of bhakti. Surdas' poetry, marked by its emotional depth and lyrical beauty, sought to break down the barriers of caste, creed, and social hierarchy that plagued Indian society during his time.
