Volume: 14 Issue: 1 2024

Abstract:

The 17th century was a pivotal period for urbanization and economic structure in the Indian subcontinent. During the Mughal Empire, cities such as Delhi, Agra, Fatehpur Sikri, and Lahore experienced significant growth. These urban centers became hubs of administration, trade, industry, and cultural activities. The expansion of Indian trade routes during this time strengthened commercial ties with European countries, boosting the prosperity of Indian cities. Urbanization also reshaped the economic structure, leading to the development of urban economies. The social and cultural impact of urbanization was equally profound. Cities witnessed changes in caste systems, social structures, and religious beliefs. Education and literature flourished, and Mughal courts made notable contributions to art, music, and literature. However, urbanization also brought challenges such as social inequalities, poverty, and pollution, highlighting the need for future reforms. Planned urbanization is essential, focusing on basic infrastructure, social inclusivity, and environmental considerations. A well-planned approach to urban development can enhance living standards and foster stability and prosperity in urban areas.
