Abstract
Economic Diplomacy and Strategic Autonomy: The Impact of Modi’s Foreign Policy on India’s Economy
Dr Nenavath Balu Naik
Volume: 16 Issue: 3 2026
Abstract:
Since 2014, India has been shifting its foreign policy of Prime Minister Narendra Modi towards economic statecraft, specifically with a focus on foreign direct investment, energy security, export growth, and more integration into global value chains. It continues the post-liberation path that has been one of "looking outwards" but is now more oriented towards economic diplomacy, strategic autonomy and multi-alignment with major partners, such as the United States, the European Union, Russia, Japan and the Gulf countries. Promoting “Make in India”, engaging with the Indian diaspora and active involvement in multilateral platforms have been used to improve India's economic standing in the world.
